China is placing AI and several frontier technologies at the centre of its next phase of scientific development, according to a newly unveiled innovation blueprint.
The priorities include artificial intelligence, quantum technology, brain-computer interfaces and controlled nuclear fusion. South China Morning Post reported that the blueprint is linked to China’s broader five-year science and technology planning.
Frontier technologies targeted
The focus reflects Beijing’s effort to strengthen domestic capabilities in areas considered important for future industry and scientific competitiveness. AI is being developed alongside hardware, robotics and advanced research infrastructure.
The blueprint also highlights the increasing overlap between scientific research and industrial policy, with technology funding being directed toward areas that could generate new products and production capabilities.
