Reuters reports that Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) have held recent talks about acquiring Unity Software, the company behind a widely used game-development engine. The report describes preliminary discussions, not a signed agreement or a confirmed offer.

The potential deal could place one of the video-game industry’s most widely used development platforms under new ownership. However, the most important detail for developers and investors is the uncertainty: Reuters said no transaction is certain, and the terms could still change.
What the reported talks involve
In an exclusive report published on 5 November and updated on 6 November, Reuters said a consortium that includes private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF had approached Unity in recent weeks. The report cited people familiar with the discussions who were not identified because the talks were confidential.
According to those sources, the group discussed a valuation of about US$25 billion before Unity released its latest quarterly results. Reuters said Unity’s market value was roughly US$21.5 billion after the earnings announcement. The reported valuation should not be treated as an agreed purchase price: the article does not describe a completed offer, and it explicitly says a deal may not happen.
Reuters also reported that Unity has been working with an investment bank to evaluate its options. Unity declined to comment on the acquisition discussions, while Silver Lake and PIF did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Unity’s latest financial results
The takeover report arrived alongside Unity’s third-quarter 2026 results, released on 5 November. In its official earnings announcement, Unity reported revenue of US$622.1 million for the quarter ended 30 September, up 32% from US$470.6 million in the same period a year earlier.
The company also reported GAAP net income of about US$121.6 million, compared with a net loss in the third quarter of 2025. Unity said this was its first quarterly GAAP-profitable result since its 2020 stock-market listing. Its results highlighted growth in its advertising business as well as its tools for creating games and interactive experiences.
Why game developers will be watching
Unity supplies development tools used to build and operate games across mobile, PC and console platforms, as well as interactive 3D applications outside gaming. For studios, the engine is part of a production pipeline that can include project files, assets, workflows, platform support and long-term maintenance.
That is why any future ownership change would attract attention well beyond financial markets. Developers, including teams in India that use Unity, will want clarity on the company’s product roadmap, support commitments, licensing terms and pricing if a transaction moves forward. None of those outcomes can be inferred from the current report.
No confirmed agreement yet
As of 8 November 2026, the reported discussions remain unconfirmed by Unity and have not produced an announced acquisition agreement. A valuation discussed by potential buyers is not the same as a formal bid, and a company evaluating its options does not mean a sale is guaranteed.
For now, the confirmed development is Unity’s latest financial report. The ownership story remains a Reuters-sourced account of confidential talks, and any change to Unity’s control or developer policies would require further confirmation.
