The Hollywood Studio System: How the Big Five Controlled Movie Careers

During Hollywood’s classical era, major studios such as MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and RKO controlled much of the movie business. Studios produced films, employed performers under long-term contracts and operated extensive distribution networks.

The end of an era

Antitrust action, changing audience habits and the decline of long-term studio contracts weakened the system after World War II. The transformation opened the door to a more independent and talent-driven Hollywood.
