Grammar vs Communication: What Should English Teaching Focus On?

Grammar is an essential part of learning English, but knowing grammar rules is not the same as being able to communicate. Effective English education needs to connect grammatical knowledge with actual language use.

Why grammar still matters

Grammar gives learners patterns for organising words and expressing time, relationships, questions, conditions and ideas. It can improve accuracy and help students understand what they read and hear. The issue is not whether grammar should be taught, but how it is taught and what students are expected to do with it.

Move from rules to use

Instead of presenting a tense only as a formula, teachers can introduce it through a situation. Students can describe what people are doing, talk about yesterday’s activities or discuss future plans. The teacher can then draw attention to the grammar pattern that naturally appears in the conversation.

  • Present a language pattern in context.
  • Let students notice examples.
  • Give controlled practice.
  • Move quickly to a meaningful speaking or writing task.
  • Review errors and useful structures after the activity.

This approach does not remove explicit teaching. It places grammar inside a larger cycle of understanding, practice, communication and feedback.

A curriculum built around communication

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 identifies effective communication, oracy and literacy as important aims of language education. NEP 2020 similarly encourages experiential approaches and links language learning with real-life experiences. Read NEP 2020 and NCF 2023.

The practical balance

A balanced English classroom can teach grammar explicitly while ensuring that students spend substantial time understanding and using language. When grammar becomes a tool for communication rather than the entire destination, students have more opportunities to turn knowledge into skill.
