New Delhi, October 14, 2026: Indian Railways loaded 135.35 million tonnes of freight in September 2026, a 6.14% increase from 127.52 million tonnes in the same month last year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Railways on October 13. Freight revenue rose 9.3% year-on-year, an increase of ₹1,266 crore.

Which cargo categories grew fastest?

The ministry reported that foodgrain loading increased 25%, clinker 20%, domestic containers 10% and coal 9%. Other goods rose 8.2%, mineral oil 6%, finished steel 5.5% and iron ore 5.2%. These are year-on-year percentage changes in individual categories; they do not mean those categories contributed equally to overall freight volume.

Coal supply to power plants

Average coal rakes supplied to power houses reached 443 per day in September, up from 397 a day in September 2025, a rise of 11.6%. Rail freight is an important link in moving domestic coal to electricity producers. The number of rakes is a logistics indicator, not a direct measure of electricity generated or power shortages avoided.

How did the first half of the financial year perform?

For April–September 2026, cumulative loading reached 833.7 million tonnes, an increase of 4.1% compared with the corresponding period last year. Cumulative freight revenue grew 3.7%. The difference between the monthly and six-month growth rates indicates that September’s performance was stronger than the half-year average.

Why does freight loading matter?

Rail freight supports movement of coal, minerals, construction materials, agricultural produce, containers and manufactured goods. Higher volumes can indicate increased transport demand across several sectors, although freight figures alone do not establish the pace of overall economic growth. Prices, commodity mix, distance moved and modal shifts can all affect rail revenue.

What do the figures mean for Maharashtra?

Industries and traders in Maharashtra depend on rail connectivity for raw materials and finished goods. However, the ministry’s release provides national totals and does not break out September growth specifically for Jalna, Mumbai, Nagpur or other districts. Local performance would require zonal or divisional data.

Passenger services are a separate measure

The official release referred broadly to continued growth in freight and passenger segments, but the numerical details reported here concern freight. These figures should not be presented as proof of faster passenger trains, lower fares or improved punctuality.

What to watch next

Upcoming monthly releases will help show whether September’s freight growth is sustained. Analysts may also compare commodity mix, cumulative loading and freight earnings with previous periods, while accounting for seasonal effects.
