Some 2026 midterm races will be called on election night, Tuesday, November 3, but control of the House or Senate may not be clear until Wednesday or later. Close contests, states that accept mail ballots after Election Day, and ranked-choice tallies can stretch the count for days. Official results come only with certification, which in most states happens weeks after the vote.

Votebeat, a nonpartisan newsroom that covers election administration, says it is “very possible, even likely” that key races will still be uncalled the morning after. That is normal and not a sign of fraud. Here is why, and what to watch.

Election night timeline: when polls close (Eastern Time)

The first results appear soon after polls close. The earliest closings are at 6 p.m. ET in parts of Indiana and Kentucky. Most of the East closes at 7 or 8 p.m. ET, the West Coast at 11 p.m. ET, Hawaii at midnight ET, and Alaska’s westernmost precincts at 1 a.m. ET Wednesday.

Wisconsin9:00 p.m.Mail processed only on Election Day
Arizona9:00 p.m.Can process mail early, but late drop-offs take time to verify

California11:00 p.m.Accepts ballots postmarked by Election Day that arrive within seven days
Alaska1:00 a.m. Wed.Accepts mailed ballots for 10 days; ranked-choice tally follows

Times and rules are from the state-by-state tracker at Congress Countdown, based on rules as of late October 2026. Some states have precincts in two time zones, so check your county election office for local hours.

Why counting can take days

  • Mail ballot checks: Every mail ballot needs a signature or ID check and must be removed from its envelope before scanning. States that can start this before Election Day report faster.
  • Late-arriving ballots: About 15 states plus Washington, D.C., count mail ballots postmarked by Election Day that arrive afterward. The window ranges from one day in Texas to as long as 21 days in Washington state.
  • Provisional, military and overseas ballots: These are verified and added after election night, so early leads can shift.
  • Ranked-choice voting: Alaska and Maine use it for congressional races. If no one wins a majority of first choices, extra rounds are run, which takes time.
  • Runoffs and recounts: Georgia and Mississippi require a majority in Senate races; if no one reaches 50%, a runoff is set for December 1, 2026. Very close margins can trigger recounts under state law.

Who “calls” a race, and what certification means

On election night, news organizations such as The Associated Press project winners once the remaining uncounted votes cannot change the outcome. A projection is not an official result. The official result comes when county and state officials finish the canvass and certify the totals. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission notes that numbers reported on election night are never the final, certified results.

Certification deadlines vary widely. A few states, such as Oklahoma, Vermont and Wyoming, certify around November 10, while California’s deadline is December 11. Newly elected members of Congress take office at noon on January 3, 2027, when the 120th Congress convenes.

How to follow results without falling for misinformation

  • Check your state or county election office website for official unofficial tallies. You can find yours through Vote.gov.
  • Expect “shifts” as mail and provisional ballots are added. In some states, in-person votes are counted first; in others, mail votes come first.
  • Be cautious with screenshots and viral posts claiming a race is “stolen” before counting ends.
  • Ignore texts asking you to “confirm your vote” or pay a fee. Election offices do not do this.

Frequently asked questions

What time will the first midterm results come in?

The first partial results appear shortly after 6 p.m. ET from parts of Indiana and Kentucky, with a larger wave after 7 and 8 p.m. ET as Eastern states close.

Does a slow count mean something is wrong?

No. Slow counts usually reflect state laws on when mail ballots can be processed and how long late-arriving ballots are accepted. Accuracy checks take time by design.

Which states usually take the longest?

States with heavy mail voting and long receipt windows, such as California, Nevada and Washington, plus ranked-choice states Alaska and Maine, often take several days to finalize close races.

When is the Georgia Senate runoff if one is needed?

If no Senate candidate in Georgia wins a majority on November 3, a runoff is scheduled for December 1, 2026.
