NAGOYA, Japan — China defeated Bangladesh 7-1 in the men’s hockey semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on October 1 to reach the gold-medal match against India. The result set up a final between two teams that advanced through contrasting semifinal contests, with India surviving Pakistan 4-3 in the other last-four match.

China produce a seven-goal semifinal

China controlled the semifinal against Bangladesh and finished with seven goals to one. The attacking output gave the hosts of the final stage a clear route into the championship match and ensured China would have an opportunity to compete for the men’s hockey title.

For Bangladesh, the semifinal appearance itself represented a deep run in the Asian Games competition. The team now moves into the bronze-medal phase after losing the opportunity to play for gold.

India survive a thriller against Pakistan

India’s semifinal was much closer. Pakistan mounted a comeback before Abhishek scored the decisive goal with only 45 seconds remaining, giving India a 4-3 victory. The result sent India into another Asian Games men’s hockey final.

A final with different styles of semifinal progress

The final will bring together China and India after very different semifinal experiences. China advanced with a six-goal winning margin, while India needed a late goal to separate itself from Pakistan. The contrasting results add another layer of interest to the gold-medal match.

India entered the tournament as the defending champion, while China now has an opportunity to challenge for the continental title. The final will also provide a major stage for players who have spent the tournament adapting to the conditions in Nagoya.

Why the hockey final matters

Asian Games hockey has significance beyond the medal itself because the event forms part of the continental competitive calendar and can be connected to Olympic qualification pathways under the applicable rules. The tournament also brings together several of Asia’s established hockey nations.

For India, reaching the final keeps the defending champions in contention for another title. For China, the semifinal victory creates a chance to win gold on a stage where home-region hockey programmes have been competing for decades.

Following the final

The men’s hockey gold-medal match will be one of the major team-sport finals of the closing days. The result will add either another Indian title or a Chinese championship to the Aichi-Nagoya medal table.

The final days in Nagoya

As the Games approach the October 4 closing ceremony, team-sport finals become increasingly important to the medal table. Hockey is one of the sports capable of producing a major late addition to a country’s medal tally because both finalists are guaranteed podium positions.
