Bhubaneswar, October 24, 2026: The 19th Urban Mobility India Conference and Exhibition concluded in Odisha’s capital after two days of discussions on the future of urban transport. Around 1,500 delegates and experts participated, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Transport planning must begin with city planning
Union Minister Manohar Lal told the closing session that mobility infrastructure should be integrated into urban planning from the outset. He outlined three priorities for future transport systems: integration, inclusiveness and intelligence. These include better connections between metro, bus and rail networks, accessible services for diverse users, and data-driven traffic management.
Metro expansion and electric mobility
The minister said nine metro projects covering approximately 174 kilometres and costing more than ₹59,000 crore had been approved since December 2025. An additional 102 kilometres of metro routes became operational during the same period, bringing the operational network to 1,185 kilometres across 26 cities. The ministry also highlighted the operation of 1,100 electric buses in 28 cities.
Research and practical solutions
Held on October 23–24, the conference focused on urban accessibility and liveability in the digital age. Twenty-eight exhibitors presented transport technologies and practices. A research symposium featured 46 selected papers, including 20 oral and 26 poster presentations. Speakers emphasized first- and last-mile connections, accessibility and turning policy discussions into practical improvements for commuters.
