Tom Kim Wins Asian Games Golf Gold for South Korea, Secures Military-Service Exemption

NAGOYA: South Korean golfer Tom Kim has won the men’s individual golf gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan, securing both a major national sporting honour and an exemption from South Korea’s mandatory military service.

Final-round 64 seals title

Kim finished at 18-under-par 262 after shooting a six-under 64 in the final round at Kasugai Country Club. He finished three strokes clear of the nearest challengers.

South Korea grants military-service exemptions to athletes who win Asian Games gold or any Olympic medal. Most able-bodied South Korean men are otherwise required to complete military service.

South Korea takes team silver

Kim also helped South Korea secure silver in the team event behind China. He said his focus was on representing his country rather than the personal exemption.
