MAHARASHTRA: NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar has proposed a 17-point relief package for drought-hit Maharashtra, expanding the political debate over how far the state should go in supporting farmers and rural families.
Loan waiver among major demands
Pawar has sought waiver of agricultural and allied-activity loans from a range of banks and credit societies, along with electricity-bill and land-revenue relief. His proposals also include cash assistance and foodgrain support for affected households.
He has additionally called for a special three-day session of the state legislature to discuss the drought.
Government and opposition differ over scale
The state has already announced drought measures, but opposition parties are pushing for broader and larger assistance. The coming weeks will show which demands translate into policy.
