India Expands Tap-and-Pay UPI Payments as Digital Transactions Enter a New Phase

MUMBAI — India’s real-time payments ecosystem has added a tap-and-pay option, giving consumers another way to make digital payments without relying exclusively on scanning QR codes. The development adds a new layer to the country’s rapidly expanding digital-payment infrastructure.

How tap-and-pay works

Tap-and-pay technology allows a compatible phone or device to communicate with a payment terminal at close range. The transaction can then be authorised through the relevant payment application and security controls.

Why it matters in India

India’s UPI network has transformed everyday payments. Consumers use UPI for purchases ranging from groceries and transport to online shopping and bill payments.

Adding contactless functionality gives merchants and consumers another option, particularly in situations where a terminal is available.

Digital payments and small businesses

Small merchants have adopted QR-based payments because they can accept digital transactions without traditional card infrastructure. Contactless options may become another useful tool where compatible devices are available.

Security remains important

Digital payment systems rely on authentication, transaction limits and fraud-monitoring systems. Users should keep payment applications updated and avoid sharing passwords or one-time authentication codes.

Apple Pay and international platforms

The introduction of additional UPI functionality comes as international payment companies examine India’s market. Apple Pay is expected to expand its presence in India, creating another potential point of competition and interoperability.

Competition and innovation

Competition among banks, payment companies and technology platforms can encourage new features and improve the user experience. At the same time, regulators must maintain standards for security and consumer protection.

What comes next

India’s payment ecosystem is likely to continue evolving through contactless payments, credit-linked products and new merchant tools. The country’s large digital user base gives companies an opportunity to test services at scale.

The bigger picture

India’s digital-payment story is moving from simply replacing cash toward building a broad financial infrastructure that connects consumers, merchants and banks. Tap-and-pay is another step in that evolution.
