Hamas Rejects New U.S. Ceasefire Proposal for Gaza — Says Core Demands Are Missing

International Desk | May 30, 2025 | Washington/Gaza

Hamas has strongly rejected the latest U.S.-brokered ceasefire proposal intended to end the Gaza war, claiming it does not meet their core demands. While Israel has accepted the plan, Hamas insists it lacks guarantees of a permanent ceasefire, complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, and unrestricted humanitarian access.

🔵 Key Provisions of the Ceasefire Proposal

  • A 60-day cessation of hostilities between Hamas and Israel.
  • Release of 10 living Israeli hostages and 18 deceased hostages’ remains by Hamas.
  • In return, Israel will release over 1,100 Palestinian prisoners.
  • Significant increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza.

U.S. officials view this as a stepping stone toward peace. Hamas, however, sees it as a short-term measure without long-term commitment.

🟥 Hamas’ Core Demands Remain Unmet

A senior Hamas official stated:

“This proposal does not address the core roots of the crisis. Without a permanent ceasefire and total withdrawal of Israeli troops, we cannot consider it a serious solution.”

The group is demanding:

  • Permanent ceasefire declaration
  • Total Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza
  • Freedom of movement for humanitarian aid and rebuilding missions
  • Lifting of all blockades and restrictions

⚠️ Humanitarian Situation in Gaza Worsens

The United Nations has issued a warning of an unfolding humanitarian disaster in Gaza:

  • 100% of Gaza’s population faces food insecurity
  • 1.5 million+ people are internally displaced
  • Hospitals lack fuel, medicines, and electricity
  • Children are dying from hunger and lack of clean water

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called it “a human catastrophe demanding urgent global attention.”

🔄 Ongoing Mediation Efforts

The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar continue to push for negotiations. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is leading discussions, while Egypt suggests monitoring and Qatar serves as a communication bridge between Hamas and the West.

Hamas has not completely dismissed the proposal but insists on revisions that fulfill their minimum conditions for peace.

📌 Conclusion

Though the ceasefire plan offers hope, the absence of key guarantees risks further escalation. Until Hamas’ demands for a permanent ceasefire and full military withdrawal are addressed, peace remains elusive.
