Greece Proposes Emergency Suspension of Asylum Applications During Mass Arrivals

LUXEMBOURG: Greece has proposed that European Union countries be allowed to temporarily suspend asylum applications during exceptional migration surges, arguing that existing rules are inadequate for very large arrivals.

Proposal follows Ceuta migration crisis

The proposal was raised with EU interior ministers following the arrival of more than 72,000 migrants in Spain’s Ceuta enclave during the summer. Some member states expressed support for exploring such a mechanism.

EU officials stressed that any measures must comply with international law and fundamental rights.

Europe continues tightening migration framework

The debate comes as EU countries implement wider asylum and return reforms, including proposals for return facilities outside the bloc.
