Germany-Commerzbank Deal: Berlin Seeks Commitments From UniCredit

Berlin is seeking clear commitments from UniCredit as the Italian lender moves closer to gaining control of Commerzbank.

UniCredit has secured nearly half of Commerzbank’s share capital. Germany, which holds a 13.3% stake, wants the bank to retain its Frankfurt headquarters, remain listed and continue playing a major role in financing small and medium-sized businesses.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said discussions with UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel were constructive. More Germany business news.
