France and Germany Hold Most of EU’s Emergency Diesel Stocks as Energy Crisis Deepens

BRUSSELS: France and Germany hold much of the European Union’s emergency diesel inventory, placing the two countries at the centre of discussions over whether Europe should release strategic fuel stocks.

Global supply disruptions tighten market

Europe has become more dependent on imported refined fuel after ending Russian imports, while conflict in the Middle East and restrictions on exports from other suppliers have tightened global availability.

Emergency stocks are designed to protect economies during serious supply disruptions, but releasing them can also reduce market prices in the short term.

Governments face difficult trade-off

European policymakers must balance immediate pressure on consumers and businesses against the need to retain sufficient reserves if the supply crisis worsens.
