RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilians are voting in a highly polarised presidential election, with incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro emerging as the two leading contenders.

159 million voters eligible

About 159 million eligible voters are choosing a president as well as lawmakers, governors and senators. Twelve presidential candidates appear on the ballot.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of valid votes, the top two will advance to a runoff on October 25.

Economy, crime and foreign policy dominate

The campaign has focused on living costs, organised crime, social policy, the Amazon and Brazil’s relationship with the United States. Voting is mandatory for most Brazilian adults.
