Austria Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler Says He Will Step Down

Vienna: Austrian Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler has announced that he will step down as the country’s second-highest government official and as leader of the Social Democratic Party.

The decision creates an important leadership change inside Austria’s governing coalition and will require the party and government to manage a transition at senior level.

Coalition implications

Changes in leadership can affect coalition negotiations, policy priorities and internal party dynamics, but Babler’s resignation does not by itself mean the government has fallen.

Attention will now turn to succession arrangements and how coalition partners respond to the change.
