Yemen Heritage Guide: Sana’a, Shibam, Zabid, Marib and Socotra

Yemen has five properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: four cultural properties and the natural Socotra Archipelago.

The Five Properties

  • Old City of Sana’a
  • Old Walled City of Shibam
  • Historic Town of Zabid
  • Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba, Marib
  • Socotra Archipelago

Why They Matter

Together these properties represent Yemen’s historic urban architecture, ancient civilizations, trade networks, traditional construction and exceptional biodiversity.

Conservation

UNESCO maintains state-of-conservation records for these properties and has documented the impact of conflict and environmental pressures on Yemen’s heritage.
