Operation Spider Web: Ukraine’s Unprecedented Drone Strikes Deep Inside Russia
By International Desk | June 1, 2025
In a bold and unprecedented move, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) launched a covert operation dubbed “Operation Spider Web”, executing a strategic drone attack deep within Russian territory. Utilizing first-person-view (FPV) drones concealed inside trucks, Ukrainian forces successfully struck four Russian military airbases, inflicting substantial damage by targeting and damaging or destroying more than 40 military aircraft, including strategic nuclear bombers. This operation, conducted thousands of kilometers from Ukraine, marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s military tactics and reportedly delivers a multibillion-dollar blow to Russia’s long-range strike capabilities.

Strategic Targets and Execution
The operation targeted four key Russian airbases:
- Belaya Airbase in Irkutsk Oblast, Siberia
- Olenya Airbase near Murmansk
- Dyagilevo Airbase near Ryazan
- Ivanovo Airbase in Ivanovo Oblast
These bases housed strategic bombers such as the Tu-95 and Tu-22M3, as well as the A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft. The drones were reportedly smuggled into Russia and concealed in wooden structures mounted on trucks. These mobile launch platforms allowed Ukraine to strike targets thousands of kilometers from its borders.

Impact and Aftermath
According to Ukrainian sources, the operation inflicted a multibillion-dollar blow to Russia’s long-range strike capabilities, significantly degrading its strategic bomber fleet. The attack reportedly destroyed or damaged over 40 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers, and at least one A-50 aircraft. The operation was personally overseen by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and took over 18 months to plan and execute.
In response, Russia launched its largest drone and missile assault since 2022, deploying 472 drones and multiple missiles, resulting in significant casualties and prompting the resignation of a top Ukrainian commander.
Geopolitical Implications
The operation occurred just before scheduled peace talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, where Ukraine seeks a full ceasefire, prisoner release, return of deported children, and a direct meeting between President Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This bold operation underscores Ukraine’s evolving military capabilities and its willingness to conduct deep strikes within Russian territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
