Istanbul is Türkiye’s largest city and a major cultural crossroads between Europe and Asia. Its historic areas, Bosphorus waterfront, markets, museums and neighbourhoods can fill several days.
Historic Istanbul
Begin around Sultanahmet, where major landmarks include Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. The Historic Areas of Istanbul are UNESCO World Heritage.
Bosphorus
A Bosphorus cruise or waterfront walk provides a different view of the city’s geography and architecture.
Markets and Neighbourhoods
Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar offer traditional shopping, while districts such as Beyoğlu, Karaköy, Kadıköy and Balat provide cafés, restaurants, galleries and local street life.
Food
Try Turkish breakfast, simit, kebabs, meze, seafood and desserts. Tea and Turkish coffee are also central to the city’s food culture.
Getting Around
Istanbul has metro, tram, ferry, bus and other public transport options. Ferries are particularly useful for crossing the Bosphorus.
Day Trips
Consider the Princes’ Islands or other nearby destinations depending on the season.
