A Chinese commercial reactor developer has reported achieving hydrogen-boron fusion reactions, marking another step in the country’s efforts to explore advanced approaches to nuclear fusion.
The experiment was reported by ENN Group in connection with its EXL-50U spherical device. South China Morning Post reported that researchers described the result as a significant contribution to work on hydrogen-boron fusion.
Why hydrogen-boron fusion matters
Hydrogen-boron fusion is being investigated because it could potentially produce fewer neutrons than some conventional fusion reactions. However, achieving sustained and commercially practical fusion remains a major scientific challenge.
The development adds to China’s broader push into controlled nuclear fusion, which has been identified as one of the country’s frontier technology priorities.
