China is preparing unusually long 15-year research grants for selected young scientists as it seeks to strengthen basic science and build a larger pipeline of frontier researchers.
Dou Xiankang, head of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, said the programme would support a group of outstanding researchers under 35. South China Morning Post reported that the approach is intended to reduce short-term performance pressure.
Long-term funding for basic research
The programme reflects a policy emphasis on sustained scientific work rather than frequent project-based evaluations. Researchers would receive long-term backing for exploratory work, provided they remain actively engaged in laboratory research.
The initiative comes as China prioritises AI, quantum technology, biotechnology and other advanced fields under its broader science strategy.
