Beijing is tightening airspace and drone controls following a light-aircraft crash near the city’s CITIC Tower earlier this year.

Authorities announced a new no-fly zone and additional drone restrictions as part of a broader effort to strengthen airspace security. Reuters reported that the restrictions are connected to the June incident, which killed the pilot and injured people on the ground.

Drone rules to become stricter

Beijing is also moving toward tighter controls on drone ownership and operation in sensitive areas. The changes are significant for a city where commercial and recreational drone activity has grown alongside China’s broader low-altitude economy.

The policy shift illustrates the balance authorities are trying to strike between expanding drone technology and maintaining public safety in a highly regulated capital.
