Washington, September 28, 2026: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has updated regulations to clarify the use of non-animal testing methods in the development of drugs and biological products.

New testing options

The FDA said the rule recognizes advances including human cells, organs-on-chips, computer models and other technologies that may be used where appropriate before human trials.

Safety standards remain

The agency said the update is intended to expand innovative testing approaches while maintaining existing safety standards for human drug development.
