WARDHA, October 2, 2026: A serious crash on the Samruddhi Expressway in Wardha district has left at least seven people dead and 22 injured after a truck reportedly struck a pickup vehicle from behind in the early hours of Friday. The pickup was carrying people returning from Shegaon with a Durga idol.
The collision occurred between Dhamangaon and Pulgaon around 2am, according to local reporting. The impact reportedly destroyed the pickup and threw some occupants toward the side of the expressway. Police and rescue teams reached the scene and shifted injured people to a hospital.
Loksatta reported that 22 people were injured and that the exact official toll was still being clarified as rescue and identification procedures continued.
What is known about the crash
The preliminary account indicates that the truck hit the pickup from behind. Investigators will need to establish the speed and position of both vehicles, visibility, driver behaviour, vehicle condition and other factors.
In a fatal highway collision, early accounts can change as investigators examine physical evidence. Responsibility should therefore not be assigned before the investigation is completed.
Why rear-end collisions can be severe
High-speed roads provide limited time for a driver to react when a vehicle ahead slows or stops. A heavy truck has substantially greater mass than a pickup, meaning a rear impact can produce severe damage.
Vehicles carrying passengers should also follow seating and loading requirements. People travelling in open or inadequately protected areas face greater risk during a collision.
Emergency response
The first priority after a major crash is to locate survivors, provide first aid and move critically injured people to appropriate medical facilities. Expressway authorities and police need clear access routes for ambulances and rescue equipment.
Accurate passenger counts can also help rescuers determine whether anyone remains missing after a vehicle is damaged or occupants are thrown from it.
Importance of highway safety
Expressway safety depends on driver behaviour, vehicle condition, road engineering, signage, enforcement and emergency response. Heavy vehicles need safe following distances and drivers must remain alert to traffic conditions.
Passenger vehicles should avoid carrying more people than permitted and should ensure that everyone is properly seated and restrained.
Impact on families
A mass-casualty road crash creates immediate emotional and logistical challenges for families. Authorities need to provide accurate identification and hospital information while respecting privacy.
What happens next
Police will investigate the circumstances and may examine CCTV, vehicle records, driver statements and physical evidence. The final number of victims and injuries will depend on official confirmation.
