A practical checklist can make an Ireland trip easier, especially when combining cities, rural areas and coastal routes.
Before You Leave
- Check passport validity and Irish entry requirements.
- Check whether you need an Irish visa.
- Keep digital and printed copies of important documents.
- Book accommodation for your planned route.
- Arrange suitable travel insurance.
- Check attraction and ferry reservations where necessary.
Visa and Entry
Ireland has its own immigration and visa system. A Short Stay C visa is used for many visits of up to 90 days for visa-required travelers, but nationality and circumstances determine whether a visa is required.
Money
The Republic of Ireland uses the euro. Northern Ireland uses pound sterling, so plan separately if your itinerary crosses the border.
Transport
Confirm train and bus routes for intercity travel. If driving, remember that vehicles drive on the left and check rental-car insurance and road rules.
Packing
Bring comfortable walking shoes, layers and waterproof clothing. Coastal trips can be windy and wet even when the forecast looks favorable.
Outdoor Safety
Check weather and local conditions before hiking or visiting exposed cliffs. Follow marked routes and local safety guidance.
If Visiting Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Check UK entry requirements separately from Republic of Ireland requirements.
